August, 2017 – Psalm 104

August, 2017 – Psalm 104

“In Psalm 104, the psalmist celebrates God’s glory in His works of creation and providence teaching the dependence of all living creatures, and contrasting the happiness of those who praise Him with the awful end of the wicked.”  (from Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible)

I recently read and meditated once again on Psalm 104 from a different point of view.  I love it that the psalm says everything was made by our Sovereign God!  But rather than focus on His creation, from all the highlighting in my online Bible, I noticed that at one time I had concentrated on Him – the sovereignty of God as Creator, and the psalmist’s affirmation of the same.  The psalm weaves in and out of the second and third singular person pronouns.  The following are some of the references to God, the Creator.

You are (twice in verse 1)                 And from verse 3 to verse 32 –

He lays . . .                                                  He made . . .

He makes . . .                                              You appoint . . .

He walks . . .                                                You give

He makes . . .  (again)                                 You open

He established . . .                                       You hide . . .

You covered . . .                                           You take . . .

You set . . .                                                   You send . . .

He sends . . .                                                You renew . . .

He waters . . .                                                He looks . . .

He causes . . .                                               He touches . . .

He may make . . .

John Gottfried Herder remarked, “It is worth studying the Hebrew language for ten years to read Psalm 104”.  How I would love to know what he knew in depth about this psalm.  But in an infinitely simpler way, as I read this psalm, I love emphasizing the pronoun.  He makes – He causes – He walks – You give – You take – He looks – You renew – and so on.  He, the Almighty and Sovereign Creator is everything!  He is life and breath.  The Savior of the world.  The way, the truth, and the life.  One could go on and on . . .    As the worship song says – for me, ‘He is my All in all’!
